Early Designs for OTP
The One True Pants continue to inch toward reality. Yesterday I dropped off fabric number one, a heavy hemp canvas with a breathable weave, at Kish’s studio. After chatting for a bit about the mysteries of the local Mormon culture and the ins and outs of common pants wear he drew up a sketch and took my measurements.
Currently, OTP will host a single mid-leg pocket designed specifically for today’s smart phone, a double front pocket on each side with wide, downward-angled openings for easy access even while seated, and two slit-style pockets in the back. The intent of the design is to allow for full functionality while maintaining a slightly “dressier” look in comparison to the standard cargo pant or carpenter pant. The flowy, linen-like hemp material should allow these pants to still be “dressed up” for more formal events while at the same time being durable and functional enough to serve as work pants and play pants as well. The pants will also feature a gusset crotch and internal knee patches for durability.
I am going to be out of town for a week, so now the plan is to return after next week and pick up the pattern made from a cheap, cotton material in order to wear them around for a day or two and test the functionality of the pockets and the sizing and then make the necessary corrections for the actual OTP.
